Studies conducted by the Brooklyn District Public Health Office and the Harlem District Public Health Office found that small grocery stores (bodegas) are the most common food retailers serving community residents, yet most do not offer a variety of affordable nutritious foods such as low-fat milk, whole grains, or fresh/frozen produce.

 


COMMUNITY COALITIONS

BROOKLYN
Brooklyn Food and Fitness Taskforce began Fall 2005 following a community meeting on DPHO Food & Fitness research. The Taskforce is a coalition of community organizations working to improve community health by enhancing the nutrition and physical activity environment, while providing linkages between local healthy food and fitness service organizations, promote existing programs and joint fundraising.

Taskforce Goals:

  • Increase awareness about benefits of healthy eating and PA (e.g. local media campaigns)
  • Increase # of PA programs in communities
  • Increase healthy options/info in restaurants, bodegas, & other food venues
  • Develop/support food co-ops in area
  • Address safety in public spaces to promote outdoor PA and active travel
  • Promote healthier food options in daycares
  • Advocate for healthier food options in public schools
  • Create community gardening programs at local libraries & community sites
  • Develop resident advocacy groups (e.g. in NYCHA, block associations, etc)
  • Build task force membership through outreach

BRONX CAMPAIGN FOR HEALTH
For the past three years the Bronx Campaign for Health, an alliance of community-based and faith-based organizations, government agencies, health care institutions and residents, has been working in collaboration with the NYC Food and Fitness Partnership to ensure every Bronx family has access to two fundamental principals that support a healthy lifestyle: 1) healthy affordable foods and 2) safe public spaces to exercise.

Last year the coalition indentified the following community priority objectives:

  • Develop and pormote a clear, consistent universal message for physical activity and nutrition in the South Bronx.
  • Continue to support existing community assessments and expanding into other communities.
  • Build relationships with Bronx Public Schools to address compliance with NYS mandates for physical education.
  • Promote and support the Greenway Initiatives beginning with the development of a social marketing campaign  
  • Compile a comprehensive list of Bronx-specific fitness and nutrition resources to be used by clinicians and other health care providers. 

HARLEM FOOD AND FITNESS CONSORTIUM
The Harlem Food & Fitness Consortium is an alliance of community boards, existing coalitions, community-based and city-wide organizations, government agencies, faith-based organizations, and health care institutions. Our mission is to foster healthy lifestyles and healthy environments in Harlem and Upper Manhattan.

The following are Primary Activities:

  • Serve as an information clearinghouse for physical activity and nutrition resources throughout Harlem and Upper Manhattan.
  • Advocate for the enactment & enforcement of healthy policies.
  • Facilitate connections and collaboration among consortium members and the community.
  • Identify gaps in services and resources.
  • Initiate broad-based community-wide campaigns
